The Kansas Jayhawks’ title defense efforts received a significant boost Wednesday when starting forward Jalen Wilson announced he will be returning to the program for the 2022-23 season. Wilson delivered his announcement via Instagram, withdrawing his name from the NBA Draft for the second consecutive season.
Former Texas Tech forward Kevin McCullar Jr. will also be joining Wilson and the Jayhawks next season, as McCullar announced Wednesday he will withdraw from this year’s draft to return to Kansas as well.
Wilson started 27 games for Kansas last season, including all six NCAA tournament games. In the championship clash against North Carolina, his 15 points matched his game-high for the season. The forward averaged 11.1 points per game and a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game as a junior last season, earning Third Team All-Big 12 honors.
McCullar averaged 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 24 starts for the Red Raiders during his junior campaign. He and Texas Tech made it to the Sweet 16 before losing to Duke.
This coming season will mark Wilson’s third with the program. The 21-year-old also declared for the 2021 NBA after starting 26 games in 2020-21. He was named to the Third Team All-Big 12 after that campaign.
