Red Wings of Tomorrow is assessing every prospect in the Detroit Red Wings system and what they are projecting to be in the future. We’ll be looking at the strengths and weaknesses of their game, as well as what the future holds for them as they advance through the Detroit organization. Today, we feature defenseman Shai Buium
How Acquired: Selected 36th overall, 2021 NHL entry draft
2021-22 total (GP-GAP): 39-3-15-18 (with the University of Denver)
Contract Status: Unsigned
Anticipated 2022-23 Team: University of Denver
Much has been written about Buium’s unique path to becoming an NHL prospect. The Red Wings traded up to snag him 36th overall in last season’s draft, and the move has looked wise already. Buium not only played on a National Championship winning team in his freshman season, he was also an important part of it.
Not only did he log important minutes for the Pioneers, he also had the primary assist on the winning goal in the National Title game. It was the hallmark of his first season: big plays, being in the right place at the right time, and continuing his upward trajectory within the Red Wings prospect pipeline.
