NY Rangers’ breakup day takeaways: Emotions remain raw

TARRYTOWN — The emotions were all over the map as the 2021-22 New York Rangers met Monday at the MSG Training Center to clean out their lockers and conduct exit interviews with team president Chris Drury.

The pride in what they accomplished by reaching the Eastern Conference Final and the disappointment in not being able to get past the two-time champion Tampa Bay Lightning were universal, but there were varying methods of coping.

In some cases, most notably stars Artemi Panarin and Igor Shesterkin, there were memorable moments of levity. The former joked about his plans to sing karaoke this summer, while the latter poked fun at likely Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews for failing to score on him this season.

But in other cases, the wounds were too fresh for humor. Chris Kreider remained visibly shaken, with close friend Mika Zibanejad accompanying him into the press conference room for support.
