Confirmed: Arsenal sign Marquinhos from Sao Paulo – Arseblog News

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian striker Marquinhos from Sao Paulo for a fee in the region of £3 million.

The 19-year-old is the first signing of what is sure to be a busy summer for the Gunners who are looking to strengthen in a number of positions.

Earmarked as one for the future, Marquinhos has moved to Emirates Stadium for a cut-price fee after Edu got wind of a contract dispute between the player and his club.

At 16, the attacker put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Sao Paulo even though FIFA rules stipulated a maximum three-year commitment at that age.

Given his contract isn’t worth the paper it’s written on, the Brazilian giants have opted to cash in now rather than take the issue to court where they would likely have lost their case.

We’re assuming Marquinhos will join up with the first team for pre-season training but it’s far from assured that he’ll be part of Mikel Arteta’s squad next season. Despite making 40 senior appearances for Sao Paulo, there are suggestions he could go out on loan to gain further experience.

It appears that’s what Wolves were planning for the player before Arsenal snatched the youngster from their grasp. The ramifications of that remain to be seen.

After signing his compatriot, Edu said: “We’re delighted to have completed the transfer with Sao Paulo, as Marquinhos was a player we had been watching for a while. At 19, he is still very young, so he is a player for the future. We look forward to Marquinhos now joining us for pre-season, making his new home, and continuing to grow and develop with us.”
